Why Choose a TreadClimber Anyway?

You get 3 workouts instead of 1.

Breaking it down…

  1. It allows you to move forwards like you would on a treadmill. TreadClimbers are meant for walking only though, unlike the majority of treadmills.
  2. You get an upwards stepping effect like on a step machine.
  3. You get a nice smooth low shock workout like with an elliptical machine.

In fact, rather than having a single treadmill belt, you have 2 treadles, one for each foot. The up and down motion they exhibit is governed by your stride pattern and pace.

THE GOOD NEWS

You get a really low impact workout that burns as much as 3.5 times as many calories as you would do on a treadmill at the same speed. You can also expend around 40% more calories than with a stair climber.

THE REALLY GOOD NEWS

Every TreadClimber comes with a 6 week satisfaction guarantee. If you’re not happy with the fitness results you’re getting, you can contact customer services and get a refund on the cost of the machine.

Features and Functions

TreadClimber’s are petty much in a world of their own at the moment – there isn’t anything else around that’s similar. The company behind them is called Bowflex which is a leading light in the fitness equipment industry.

If you are thinking of buying one, what are the key factors you need to consider when choosing between the current models?

Motor – this isn’t quite such a dominant issue as with treadmills, as you are walking. Reliability at fast speeds just doesn’t come up.

Size – some treadmills and ellipticals are huge. TreadClimbers on the other hand some in with a much smaller footprint. You don’t need a long stride length for one.

Portability – all TreadClimbers have transport wheels to make them easy to move around.

Resistance adjustment – other than the TC5, which is self-powered, they all come with variable resistance settings, and are very similar across the range of models on the market.

Workout options – the more the pay, the more varied and impressive these get.

Flexibility – some machines allow you to select between Stairmaster and Treadmill modes which is a great plus.

Additional features – look for wireless chest straps and accessory storage.

User requirements – all TreadClimbers have a user weight limit of 300 pounds. To work out if your ceiling is high enough, add your height to the treadle max height (17 inches) plus a little bit extra for safety (2-3 inches), and that is your minimum ceiling height.

Which TreadClimber To Go With?

The TC20 is clearly the top of the range model, with a higher speed than the TC10, and the longest treadles of all the models. The TC5 is set up quite differently, being powered by you rather than with a motor, so it comes in a lot cheaper. The TC20 has a very reliable integrated heart rate monitor which operates wirelessly and is a real plus. It can also store and manage profiles for multiple users, and comes with more advanced workout programming options, notably comprehensive G.O. Coach Technology to plan customized goal orientated workouts.

The other key point is the warranty you get. The TC20 offers, 3 years, the TC10 2 years, with 1 year on the TC5. Whichever option you go for, the warranty covers every element of the machine unlike some warranties which have very short cover on moving parts, the motor or wear items like the belt. However, 3 years is exceptionally good cover for a piece of equipment like this.
